Agencies Friday, Aug 07,2009 12:32 Hrs
Lucknow: Medical authorities on Friday went into a tizzy initially after a local of the Kaiserbagh area reported to them that expired medicines were found in a garbage heap in the area. All the medicines found were of reputed brands.

Gautam Bharti, the resident of the area told the authorities that medicines were in the garbage and this could be dangerous as anybody could consume it. After receiving the complaint, the health authorities reached the site and took stock of the situation. The number of medicines found were 300 in total and they were of different big brands. Chief medical officer (CMO) A K Shukla said, "It's still not known to us as to who disposed off these expired medicines in the garbage heap."

Talking on the issue of proper disposal of medicines past expiry date, Shukla added, "In case of expired injection and if they are in large quantity they are taken back by the manufacturer concerned but here the number of each brand of medicine is not more than 20."

When inquired about whether this calls for an investigation as to who disposed off these medicines, Shukla said that they have still not decided on that.
