CM gets an 'owl scare'
Bangalore Mirror Tuesday, Jul 28,2009 23:24 Hrs
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has a new visitor at his home office Krishna on Kumarakrupa Road. It’s a barn owl. The bird has been spotted sitting on the pine tree in the evenings, exactly opposite the conference hall on the first floor. The CM, who also holds the forest portfolio, regularly holds meetings with visitors at the conference hall.

The superstitious construe owl sightings as a bad omen. The CM has not been informed about the owl yet. For now, his security guards have decided not to shoo away the winged visitor.

A senior security officer at the CM’s house told Bangalore Mirror that guards were initially scared on seeing the big owl and tried to chase it away. But it kept returning and they finally decided to let it stay.

A senior official who assists the CM acknowledged the owl visits. He added, “Security officials approached me whether it should be shooed away or not as it is associated with bringing bad fortune to the occupants of the house. But I told them not to disturb the bird as it would only come, sit and go. I advised them not to harm it.”

Renowned astrologer Daivajna Somayaji explained that sighting an owl in front of a house is certainly inauspicious. “It clearly hints at the possible effects of black magic on the occupants of the house. It also means some kind of inconvenience,” he said. This may not be what Yeddyurappa would like to hear when five assembly segments in the state go the bypolls today. HOME IN THE CONCRETE JUNGLE

The barn owl is known for its long wings and legs. It measures up to 45 cm in length and has a short squarish tail. Barn owls, which once thrived on the outskirts of Bangalore, have been invading the concrete jungle as their habitat has been encroached on by the burgeoning city. Many city-based bird watching teams have spotted barn owls at various parts of the city.
