WB governor urges state govt to act on political violence

Kolkata: Close on the heels of Union Home minister P Chidamabaram stating that many districts in West Bengal had become 'killing fields', Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi tonight urged the Left Front government to 'act rapidly' to bring the perpetrators of violence to book."Following the elections to the 15th Lok Sabha, our state has witnessed a veritable 'tandava' of political violence. Not a day passes without someone somewhere being killed for his politics. The widow's wail rends each day," Gandhi, who had indicted the state government in 2007 for the 'recapture' of Nandigram, said in a statement here.
Stating that while it was the duty of political leaders to 'identify the violent' within their organisations, he said he was confident that the government would move swiftly to check the "phenomenon of illicit arms" and act to bring the perpetrators of violence to book.
Gandhi said the Congress, Trinamool Congress and Left Front legislators had met him in turn and "asked me to do what I can to stem the violence".
"When the leading political formations of West Bengal have the same same objective, why should violence not abate? Because, I believe, those who can act are not doing so," he said.
