Proclaimed offender takes sleuths for a ride, escapes
Agencies Friday, Aug 07,2009 12:32 Hrs

Chandigarh: A proclaimed offender left vigilance sleuths stunned when he not only managed to them the slip, but also allegedly kidnapped one of them before finally dumping him by the roadside on Friday afternoon.

Wanted by Punjab vigilance department in a cheating and forgery case registered at Ferozepur, Rajdeep Singh was declared a proclaimed offender in 2004.

On receiving a tip-off that Rajdeep was present at the Sector-35 shop of his maternal uncle Vinod Sharma, a team of three vigilance officers swooped on the place, said SHO of police station-36 Anokh Singh.

‘At the time of the raid, the informer of vigilance department was also present at Singh Builders, the shop. The team, headed by inspector Sudershan Singh, also included ASI Baljeet Singh and constable Balbir Singh,’ he added.

Sources said as soon as the sleuths nabbed Rajdeep, Sharma and his associate Ram Parkash raised a hue and cry and called up the UT police control room. However, before city police could reach the shop, Sharma allegedly agreed to send Rajdeep along with the vigilance team in his personal Octavia Skoda (CH-04H-3581).

‘As constable Balbir Singh and Rajdeep Singh sat in the skoda, Ram Parkash zipped away and escaped from the spot,’ said the SHO. He added the accused pushed the abducted constable out the car near the Sectors 33-34 piding road and fled.

Sector-36 police have registered a case of abduction, assault and using criminal force to deter public servant on his duty against Rajdeep, Ram Parkash and Sharma. Though Sharma has been arrested, the other two are still absconding.

Revenge motive?

Levelling allegations against cops, Vinod Sharma said a Punjab police officer in Ferozepur was arrested for accepting bribe in 2000 after Rajdeep Singh complained against him. ‘They’re trying to take revenge,’ he charged. However, sources said Rajdeep turned hostile during the trial, leading to the cop’s acquittal
